On-site composting, Big Apple style

Article Abstract:

The New York City Department of Sanitation has introduced a number of initiatives designed to reduce the volume of waste which enters landfill facilities. Most significantly, it has linked with four Botanical Gardens and the New York City Housing Authority to set up an extensive backyard composting program. It has proved difficult to establish whether the program has gained acceptance among ordinary residents, so attention is now focusing on large generators of organic residuals. However, there has been considerable success among people living in properties owned by the New York City Housing Authority.

Biogas in Elsinore: anaerobic digestion for soil amendment and energy

Article Abstract:

Twenty thousand tons of organic waste produced by 70,000 households in Elsinore, Denmark provide the materials for the operation of the biogas plant near the city. The North-Sealand Biogas plant facility uses a pulping vessel which processes the organic materials. The products undergo a thermal and alkaline treatment which enhances digestibility of fibers. Dissolved organics in the liquid portion of the pulp are then converted into biogas by high-yield methane reactors.
