Promoting community composting

Article Abstract:

The Master Composter program at the Cornell Cooperative Extension at Tompkins County, NY, offers an outreach program on composting that promotes the composting at the community level through the cooperative efforts of local residents. The outreach program involves promoting awareness through theater, getting local residents to participate and encouraging commercial businesses to divert biodegradable products to the compost heap.

Municipal recycling program leads to backyards

Article Abstract:

Solon, OH, (pop. 21,000) has racked up a series of impressive accomplishments in terms of its solid waste programs. The programs involve years of focused promotion and education that have encouraged residents to engage in home composting. At least 3,000 of Solon's 7,000 homes have composters. The city and its residents also collect 19 different recyclable materials including oil, antifreeze, paint, drywall compound and stains.

Mulch/compost and the marketplace

An overview is presented on a Massachusetts composting and mulching service. The company, Grounscapes Express, uses blower trucks to spread mulch on a wide range of landscapes for erosion control, including residential, commercial and government projects.
