Gone with the windrow

Article Abstract:

Hurricane Andrew's damage to southern Florida and Louisiana contributed a large volume of construction and demolition debris (C&D) to the waste stream. The country's landfills already contain a big bulk of C&D waste. Many states do not realize the potential of C&D waste as recycable building materials. North Carolina, for instance, utilized 1,500 tons of recycled products in constructing a two mile strip of highway. Arizona used recycled tires to construct asphalt highways. The construction industry can help reduce the waste stream if it considers recycling of C&D waste.
