Vermicomposting in Australia and New Zealand

Article Abstract:

Australia and New Zealand employ vermicomposting techniques for yard trimmings and biosolids at household and large-scale levels. Worm composting is gaining popularity as an educational activity in Australia. Household composting diverts about 11,000 tons of food residuals per year from waste management systems. Vermicasting sales bring revenues and save landfill spaces. In New Zealand, pilot projects for small-scale vermicomposting of food residuals at low cost will be undertaken. Waste reduction, improving the environment, and generating more jobs are the goals behind the projects.

A recycling sampler from across the Pacific

Article Abstract:

Materials recovery programs in Thailand, Australia, Malaysia, and New Zealand show that managing waste is possible with or without important scientific discoveries, by implementing solutions that are locally relevant. The scavengers of Bangkok in Thailand use a simplistic approach of recovery and recycling. The container deposit scheme in Malaysia takes cognizance of its economic conditions. The refillable glass bottle scheme reveals the improvisation on existing schemes in Dunedin, New Zealand.
