Water quality deterioration in distribution systems

Article Abstract:

The adverse effect of microorganisms in water quality deterioration during transmission has been well established since the late 1800s. Much of the pioneering work of leaders in the waterworks profession has been lost or obscured by antiquity. Yet, most of the remedial measures regarding water quality in general use in 2000 originated from the observations of the scholars in the 'lost' research or were originally recommended by these people. An overview of the contributions of these earlier researchers will likely help people in the water profession.

Water quality deterioration in distribution systems

Article Abstract:

Widespread and pilot plant studies were conducted among water distribution systems to determine microbially-mediated deterioration of water quality during filtration. The chemical influence of microbial activity and procedures for assessing methods of controlling microbial growth and oxygen depletion were determined. There was evidence that microbial growth on sand filter beds mediated chemical transformations which resulted in water quality deterioration.
