What drives deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon? Evidence from satellite and socioeconomic data

Article Abstract:

The land use model was used to examine why Brazil's rainforests are being cut down and whether the rate of deforestation is affected by public policies. A number of determinants of deforestation suggested by the land use model were tested using data for 1978 to 1988. The findings reveal the significance of several factors, including land characterstics such as vegetation density and soil quality, and transport cost factors such as distance to primary markets and county roads.
