Reaching higher on the waste can

Article Abstract:

Effective management of organic residuals in Portland, OR, involves recovery and redistribution of edible food and recovery and processing of commercial organics. Programs such as the Grocery Industry Waste Minimization or Greener Grocer and the From the Wholesaler to the Hungry were implemented to collect edible but unsellable food for distribution to the poor instead of taking them to landfills. Meanwhile, commercially generated organics are collected and transported to compost sites and vermiprocessing facilities.

Independents face waste industry consolidation

Article Abstract:

Consolidation of the solid waste and recycling industries is revealing a trend towards investment in independent companies. Speciality recyclers and niche haulers are attractive targets for larger purchasing companies, which usually boast a decentralised management philosophy. Since 1994, Casella Waste Systems has bought 110 companies, while Allied Waste Industries has bought 50 companies in less than two years.
