Eight is a magic number

Article Abstract:

The Chinese tradition of foretelling a building's future by assessing its properties that may or may not be pleasing to supernatural forces, has been recognized in the construction of Shanghai's Jin Mao tower. The practice feng shui has made consistent references to the lucky number eight such as the building is designed to be 88 stories high. The outer architectural expression at the building's base is 16 stories high. The vertical parts of the Tower are an octagonal reinforced megaconcrete shear-wall core, eight exterior composite megacolumns and eight outer steel megacolumns.
