Reconstructing Constable country

Article Abstract:

John Constable's paintings reflect a rural England that the National Trust is trying to preserve, and in some ways recreate. Constable's work has grown in popularity from relative obscurity during his life, to become what is identified as the 'real' rural England. The vistas in Constable's paintings have changed in the intervening years as a result of development and neglect but efforts are underway to return the area to some semblance of what Constable painted.

"Black writers and white!": Jack Conroy, Arna Bontemps, and interracial collaboration in the 1930s

Article Abstract:

The collaboration between black writer Arna Bontemps and white writer Jack Conroy in the 1930s provides an interesting and instructive example of interracial cooperation. Together, the two authors wrote five books, which was a major accomplishment during that age of segregation. The Bontemps-Conroy collaboration also gives the literary scholar some interesting insights into intersecting black and white literary traditions in the first half of this century.
