CinemaStar makes a comeback

Article Abstract:

CinemaStar Luxury Theaters of Del Mar, CA, has sold a 70% controlling interest to The Rust Group and S.C.P. Private Equity Investors for $15 million in December 1998. The public owns the remaining 30% of CinemaStar. The move was partly as a result of the initiative of former Los Angeles basketball player James Villanueva, who is partner of The Rust Group, to capitalize on building and buying movie theaters in neighborhoods bypassed by major cinema chains. Villanueva believes that the Hispanic locations in Southwest and Mexico have a high growth potential. Among CinemaStar's properties include eight theaters with 79 screens in Southern California and Tijuana, Mexico.
