Article Abstract:

The outfit chosen for the Bath Museum of Costume's Dress of the Year for 1996 is in fact not a dress at all, but a pair of trousers. These are shiny red 'bumster' trousers designed by Givenchy couturier Alexander McQueen, and have a matching red-and-black brocade tunic. McQueen's career has developed very rapidly recently, and his achievements are being compared with those of Yves Saint Laurent. The men's outfit selected to epitomise 1996 fashion was a single-breasted Paul Smith suit from the spring/summer 1996 collection.
