From Herat to Kabul: retracing Robert Byron's road to Oxiana

Article Abstract:

A freelance writer narrates his journey from Herat to Kabul in Afghanistan, which was undertaken as part of an effort to traverse the same route through which Robert Byron travelled between 1933 and 1934. The journey was inspired by Byron's acclaimed travelogue, 'The Road to Oxiana'. Herat is an old Silk Road town, which is one of the peaceful cities in Afghanistan. It still has many ancient ruins. Balkh is an ancient city, which lies on the road to Kabul. The ancient shrine of Abu Nasr Parsa is situated here. Another important place is Ghazni, with its towers of Victory.

Finding our feet: on the road with Anna Deavere Smith

Article Abstract:

Anna Deavere Smith explores American character and interethnic relationships through her performance of monologues in " On the Road: A Search for American Character." Her monologues are based on actual conversations and interviews. The experience of speaking others' words and feeling off-balance seems a good way of seeing other people's perspectives. Meaning lies in the conversations and in the gaps in conversation and in the actual act of communications itself.
