The Merits of Merit Pay for Teachers

Article Abstract:

The experts in the field of merit pay are personnel executives, not teachers or politicians. To implement a successful merit pay system, supervisors must be willing and able to differentiate on the basis of performance, and to frankly give the results of evaluations to subordinates. Mutual trust is necessary between supervisors and subordinates. To give incentives for better performance, better performers in the same job should be rewarded with higher pay. Employers must be sure pay is externally competitive and internally equitable. At present, the teaching environment lacks the right climate for merit pay.
