In that golden land: the spiritual Odyssey of Henry Roth's 'Call It Sleep.'

Article Abstract:

Henry Roth's novel about Jewish immigrant life in early 20th-century New York City, 'Call It Sleep,' is critiqued. The tale's power lies in the questions it hurls to the reader about the search for spiritual meaning in the modern world as embodied by Jewish settlers from Europe. The tension between the author's criticism of modern American culture and his search for a modern Jewish identity underlies the novel and provides the key to its understanding.
