India today

Article Abstract:

India in the 1990s retains the eternal feature of a country with immense diversities. However, poverty, over-population, and illiteracy remain the continuing malaise of India. Communalism, casteism, corruption, and criminalization stand in the way of the country's development. Amidst such problems, the activism of the Supreme Court, the Chief Election Commissioner's initiatives, and the tolerant and secular character of the society are signs of hope. The economic reforms and India's role in global affairs are critical issues despite recent improvement in Indo-British ties.
