Mountains, mules and monks: the society's Young Persons Expedition to Kinnaur, Spiti and Lahaul, 1995

Article Abstract:

The Royal Society for Asian Affairs has sponsored another Young Persons' Expedition in India in 1995. Aimed at promoting interest in Asia among young people, the 1995 voyage explored the areas of Kinnaur, Spiti and Lahaul just below southwestern Tibet. The western end of the Himalaya, Karakorum and Hindu Raj were explored during the first young persons' expedition in 1992, after which two other expeditions to the area were made in association with the society. The journeys involve visiting remote regions and the experience of the areas' physical aspects such as the geography, climate and the culture of their inhabitants. The young participants are accompanied by guides with mountaineering experience and knowledge of the areas.
