The travels of William and Ellen Craft: race and travel literature in the 19th century

Article Abstract:

The concept of travel as liberty is explored in a comparison of slave narratives and literature written by white travelers, using the slave narrative of William and Ellen Craft written in 1860. Travel affords both groups freedom of place and personal agency, and enables them the freedom to write about their experiences; therefore, textual and structural similarities can be found between the two genres.

From Romanism to race: Anglo-American liberties in 'Uncle Tom's Cabin'

Article Abstract:

An analysis is presented on Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel, 'Uncle Tom's Cabin', focusing on the link between slavery and anti-Catholic sentiment. Stowe establishes many of these links throughout the book, such as the comparison of the slave's condition to Inquisition torture; a comparison is also included on the similarity of Antebellum Protestant prejudices regarding Catholics and blacks.
