True to life: Life magazine's coverage of African Americans, 1936-40

Article Abstract:

A critique is presented on the prevalence of stereotypical images of African Americans in Life magazine in the late 1930s. Although many African Americans had made notable professional achievements during that time, becoming politicians and doctors, photographs of African Americans in Life were most often of servants, entertainers and athletes, reinforcing the prejudices of that era.
