Two dilemmas: Ralph Bunche and Hugo Black in 1940

Article Abstract:

Political scientist Ralph Bunche's interview of U.S. Supreme Court Associate justice Hugo Black in 1944 explores issues of racism and race relations. Both of them were key members in the African-American civil rights activities of the 1930s and 1940s. While they had fairly similar political ideas, their attitudes to race were markedly different in that Bunche challenged the existing racism whereas Black accepted many of the prejudices. They both believed that economic issues had to be addressed for true racial equality. The text of the interview is included.

Nisei in Gotham: The JACD and Japanese Americans in 1940s New York

Article Abstract:

The most unique element of wartime New York Japanese community life and one in which resettlers would also play a prominent role was the establishment of a mass Nikkei political action group, the Japanese American Committee for Democracy (JACD). It encouraged the Nisei to look beyond their own group interests in support for the war effort thus reaching out to the African Americans, but its activism was stunted by its refusal to downplay the injustice done to Japanese Americans in the West Coast.
