An assessment of parent involvement in local interagency teams

Article Abstract:

A study of parents' participation in local interagency teams shows an increase in active involvement in their child's treatment planning in some areas, from 1990 to 1993. These teams have representatives of community mental health centers, education system, and child welfare organizations. Parental attendance at meetings, and awareness about available services and child's legal rights have improved over the three year period, but the improvement level is lower than expected. Parents' perception of their being an equal member of the treatment group is considerably low.

Empowering parents: the use of the parent as researcher paradigm in early intervention

Article Abstract:

The parent plays an important role as a researcher paradigm in the study of early intervention for families of young children with disabilities. Past studies reveal that parental perceptions on the style of early intervention services have a significant role in the effectiveness of the services in contrast with the opinions of professionals. Thus, the process of empowerment of the family, particularly the parents, is critical in the success of early intervention of young children with disabilities.
