Antecedents of parent-adolescent disagreements

Article Abstract:

A theory which assumes that parent-adolescent conflict is primarily determined by family context was evaluated. Under such theory, it is presupposed that warmth and supportiveness within a family bring about peaceful conflict settlement between parents and children. The theory further states that when hostility and coercion prevail, disagreements between parents and children are unlikely to be resolved. Findings from a four-year study of 335 families verified the theory's assumptions.

Early adolescent sexual activity: A developmental study

Article Abstract:

Predictors of early sexual intercourse for 457 adolescents in grades 8-10 from two-parent and single-mother families, were examined using event history analysis. Results suggest significant falls in the effect of mother monitoring by 10th grade. The main predictors of early intercourse were age, association with delinquent peers, alcohol use, opportunity and sexually permissive attitudes.
