Rushdie freedom fighters

Article Abstract:

The Council of Europe meeting to discuss freedom of expression was held in Oslo, Norway, during Sept 1998. The problem of authors keeping the copyright over their work was examined, particularly with the introduction of new technology, such as the Internet. One speaker questioned the validity of writers having more right to freely express their views than neo-Nazi pop groups. Another speaker called for the right to blaspheme. Author Salman Rushdie's situation was discussed, as a writer who had been given a death threat because of the views he expressed in his book.
