Body mass index, self- esteem, and suicide risk in clinically depressed African American and white American females

Article Abstract:

The differences between African American and White American females with regard to self- esteem and depression, and depression and body mass index (BMI) are discussed. Obese white American females are found to have lower self- esteem and higher suicide risk than healthy- weight females.

Parent-adolescent relationship and adolescent psychological funtioning among African-American female adolescents: self-esteem as a mediator

Article Abstract:

The quality of the parent-adolescent relationship across age groups was examined for differences among younger versus mid-range versus older adolescents. It also examines self-esteem as a possible mediator based on 608 African-American urban adolescent females.
