Chiron, an archetype for the wounded and underpublished professor

Article Abstract:

Greek mythology contains many archetypes that are relevant to the world today such as the story of the Centaur Chiron and the underpublished professor. Both are torn between conflicting roles: for Chiron being human and horse and for professors being teachers, researchers, grant writers and community servants. Chiron manages to overcome the obstacles to become a teacher and so can professors. Some suggestions for time management, overcoming writers' block through creative space and discipline and recognizing human and technological aids such as computers are included.

From stereotype to archetype: single parent families

Article Abstract:

Single parenthood is a time-honored tradition that is born out of both modern necessity and biological instinct more often, or more properly, than out of conscious choice. In many ways, it reflects the archetype of the virgin in that term's original sense, the woman who is complete unto herself and is not conquered or owned. The sufficiency of the single-parent family, rather than its supposed deficiency is a more appropriate focus, especially as increasing numbers of women and girls are forced into such families.
