Commentary on publishing

Article Abstract:

An University of Delaware human behavior professor had negative experiences with his graduate mentors who discouraged publishing while still in school. However, he prevailed and published one article before graduating and later establishing a rewarding mentoring relationship with a Houghton-Mifflin editor. He believes in writing extensively and having more than one article submitted at one time. When mentoring himself, he believes in giving students as much freedom as necessary and only offering his services when asked. The advantage of books over articles is a wider audience.

Reflections on publishing: perspectives of an author and editor

Article Abstract:

A retired University of Florida sociology professor recounts his experience with scholarly publishing such as the help of his mentor and his response to a rejection letter. The professor bases his reviewing decisions on the journal's criteria and the relative importance of the article to the field. He encourages new professors to publish as early as possible though he disagrees with the tendency to award promotion on the basis of article citation. He has acted as mentor for some of his graduate students, a position he finds very satisfying.
