Determinants of child custody arrangements at divorce

Article Abstract:

An analysis of 509 divorce cases filed in Michigan, US, in the 1980s shows that the determination of custody rights on children based on socioeconomic conditions is affected by gender. The fathers are more likely to gain custody if they are employed, when the fathers are plaintiffs or when the eldest child is a male. The educational qualifications of the fathers do not affect the custody decisions but mothers with at least a college education have a better chance of getting custody.

The effect of parental supportive behaviors on life satisfaction of adolescent offspring

Article Abstract:

A study of 640 adolescents aged between 12-16 years, to assess the influence of parental support on adolescents' life satisfaction using LISREL analysis shows that both paternal and maternal support are necessary for teenagers to have life satisfaction. The findings suggest that mothers are more nurturing and are limited due to nonavailability of data on children in divorced families.

Parent-adolescent language use and relationships among immigrant families with East Asian, Filipino, and Latin American backgrounds

Article Abstract:

Language use did not predict differential changes in parent-adolescent relationships over a two-year period, but the quality of relationships did predict changes in language use. The link between parent-adolescent language use and cohesion, conflict and discussion was found to be very consistent.
