The effects of single-mother families and nonresident fathers on delinquency and substance abuse in black and white adolescents

Article Abstract:

The effects of single-mother families and nonresident fathers on adolescent behaviors such as delinquency and substance abuse differ for white and black adolescents. The single-mother families affect the sons more negatively than daughters. Adolescents in black single-mother families have less negative outcomes than those in white families. Involvement of nonresident father with adolescent in single-mother families has a positive effect on black adolescents and a negative effect on white adolescents. Single-mother families are more institutionalized in black cultures.

The first teenage pregnancy in the family: Does it affect mothers' parenting, attitudes, or mother-adolescent communication?

Article Abstract:

Mothers in three family types were examined in an effort to understand the consequences of adolescent pregnancy and childbearing for the family. The results showed that mothers of never-pregnant teens had less permissive attitudes, higher monitoring levels and higher achievement expectations, and viewed early childbearing as more problematic. The within-family risk factors associated with teenage pregnancy are highlighted and suggestions as to how families may be affected by adolescent pregnancy are provided.

The effects of parenting on the development of adolescent alcohol misuse: A six-wave latent growth model

Article Abstract:

The hypothesis that family factors would have an effect on individual trajectories in the development of alcohol misuse was tested. Data, based on interviews with 506 adolescents in a northeastern metropolitan area, was analyzed. Results indicated that parenting significantly predicts adolescents' initial drinking rates, and their rates of increase in alcohol misuse.
