Effects of parental behavior on tobacco use by young male adolescents

Article Abstract:

A study by the Center for Family Research in Rural Marital Health, Iowa State University, concerning a sample of 204 seventh grade boys, their parents and siblings, used correlational and structural equation models to reveal that harsh parenting was directly related to adolescent tobacco use, while nurturing parenting was inversely related. The adolescents' acquaintance with tobacco-using peers influenced this relationship considerably.

However, parents' education was not found to be connected to the initial degree of adolescent self-reported physical health. Results were further supported by a prospective, longitudinal research design.
