Gendered perceptions of father involvement in early 20th century America

Article Abstract:

Analysis of the contents of 256 letters written between 1925 and 1939 by middle-class parents to nationally acclaimed educator and author Angelo Patri reveals possible exaggerations in accounts of deficient paternal child care in the first-half of the 20th century. This is suggestive of mothers' accounts of child care being biased in discarding the role played by fathers in order to usurp all credit for the growth in stature of their children.

The changing culture of fatherhood in comic-strip families: a six-decade analysis

Article Abstract:

A content analysis of 490 Father's Day and Mother's Day comic strips from the period 1940 to 1999 is presented. There has been a rise in the number of comic-strip characters who are parents, and therefore more opportunities for readers to see fictitious parents undertaking child-care activities.
