Impact of exposure to community violence on anxiety: a longitudinal study of family social support as protective factor for urban children

Article Abstract:

A longitudinal study was conducted on 385 African American children in an urban public school system to investigate the effects of exposure to community violence on the development of anxiety, and the role of family social support in this relationship. Results show that violence exposure does not effect anxiety development among boys. However, girls who have witnessed a number of violent acts are reported to have high anxiety levels, which can be further aggravated by low family social support.
