Gordion, Turkey

Article Abstract:

The archaeological site in Gordion near Ankara, Turkey, remains one of the University of Pennsylvania Museum's famous and long-running excavations. The excavation, which began in 1950 under the supervision of University of Pennsylvania archaeologist Rodney S. Young, has already revealed a rich cache of artifacts, the most significant of which is the Midas Mound, which covered a wooden chamber thought to be King Midas's tomb. The chamber and two other burial mounds excavated from Gordion contained rare wooden furniture that museum and city officials are trying to conserve.

Balancing act

The market for leisure services in the UK is becoming polarised into two sectors: the time rich/cash poor and the cash rich/time poor. The future of local authority leisure services lies with their leisure managers, whose single largest challenge is finance. While it is widely accepted that leisure services are essential, there will never be enough money to provide a comprehensive leisure and culture service.
