Marriage timing in Sri Lanka: the role of modern norms and ideas

Article Abstract:

A complex interconnection of developmental and historical factors influence delayed marriages in Sri Lanka. Family and cultural factors are significant determinants of marriage timing of young Sri Lankan women, despite the introduction of modern ideologies. Modernity has actually resulted in earlier marriages since Sri Lanka has a history of late marriages. School attendance is also important to the delayed marriage of Sri Lankan women. However, financial independence is not a cause for delayed marriage due to limited employment opportunities.

The relationship between commitment and dependency in marriage was analyzed. Factors such as income, occupational and labor dependency were found to increase commitment in marriage. However, perceived responsibility to remain committed in marriage had the greatest influence on individual's decision to stay committed. Commitment was measured based on spouses' perception of the negative sanctions that they may receive should the marriage end.
