Perceptions of parents: a measure of adolescents' feelings about their parents

Article Abstract:

The perceptions of adolescents about their parents were investigated. A Perceptions of Parents measure was developed to test whether adolescents' feelings toward their parents are related to therapeutic interventions for psychologically distressed adolescents. Empirical results showed that positive feelings toward parents are correlated with better psychological functioning while negative feelings are correlated with problematic psychological functioning. Younger adolescents do not appear to feel differently toward their mother and father as opposed to older adolescents.

Article Abstract:

The links between adolescent individuation and self-esteem and between adolescent individuation and family differentiation are examined using information from 170 Korean adolescents. Three dyadic interaction patterns, father-adolescent, mother-adolescent and parents' marital, are analyzed to measure family differentiation. Results show a significant relationship in differentiation and adolescent individuation in adolescent and same-sex parent pairs.
