Curing the "NIMBY" cancer

Article Abstract:

The 'Not In My Back Yard' (NIMBY) mentality hinders the development of affordable housing. This line of thinking has been very effective in killing much-needed low-income projects partly because housing and community development (H/CD) practitioners and other affordable housing advocates are not doing anything significant to counter the growing grassroots movement for local governmental control and self-determination. Unmindful of the dynamic changes transforming society and affordable housing, H/CD professionals continue to employ marketing strategies based on a 'macro' perspective. They need to realize that the new environment calls for a 'micro' perspective. They need to be able to convince communities of the economic benefits of affordable housing projects.
