The family and educational aspirations

Article Abstract:

The role of the family in the educational aspirations of children was investigated. Data from the High School and Beyond Study involving over 58,000 high school seniors and sophomores were analyzed to determine the extent of variation in the educational aspirations of children within the family. Empirical results showed that the family is strongly correlated with the educational aspirations of children. On the other hand, no evidence was found to support the assumption that sex and ordinal position of siblings affect the relationship between family and educational aspirations.

A model for the analysis of paired data

Article Abstract:

A latent-variable structural equation model is advanced as a procedure for analyzing data on couples or dyads, or paired data. The model factors in within- and between-family variation in patterns of effects, since it operates on the assumption that individual responses can serve as indicators of family-level concepts. It can be applied when two or more observations are derived from a single entity, such as the same family or household. Its use is demonstrated using data on sibling pairs from the High School and Beyond Study.
