1996 Cabernet preview: the new vintage is showy in our first blind tasting, despite an unusual growing season

Some bad weather in California may have affected the 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon vintage, but tastings of barrel samples will give wine lovers hope. Five wines scored in the 95-100 range, based on a rating scale of one to 100. California Cabernet vintages are also profiled.

Article Abstract:

The 1998 vintage of Cabernet wines from California are discussed with emphasis on their quality. The wines are quite good despite problems with ripening, but not as good as other vintages from this decade and they are more tannic.
