Why 1994 may be the best of all: a vintage date amounts to a snapshot that captures a year's growing conditions

Article Abstract:

Climatic factors are significant in determining whether a given year will produce a good vintage. The amount and timing of rainfall is important, with normal to low rainfall being ideal. Good California vintages and different types of wines are discussed.

The 'Wine Spectator' has chosen Chateau St. Jean Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County Cinq Cepages 1996 as its wine of the year in 1999. An evaluation of this wine and a listing of the top 100 wines of 1999 is presented.
