The European food industry is frustrated over the new Common Agricultural Policy adopted by the European Union. The food industry believes that the European Union is ill-prepared for the upcoming round of World Trade Organisation negotiations and feels that the reformed CAP will not help the industry boost its exports of agricultural products in the increasingly important world market.

The French food industry has been hurt by the public outcry over the Belgian dioxin scandal and by a German television documentary claiming that French animal feed manufacturers were using waste-contaminated water.
