Handling slow movers: the HBC/GM dilemma

Article Abstract:

Retailers must identify the real costs of handling store goods on a category by category basis when choosing the best way of managing health and beauty care and general merchandise categories, according to Paul Weitzel, director of Willard Bishop Consulting of Barrington, IL. A report conducted by Willard Bishop Consulting said sourcing decisions are best chosen by studying two related dimensions: the unit velocity, defined as average unit sales per store per week, and cost of handling, which are activity-based costs expressed as cents per unit.
