German confectioners see high volume, but low value growth

Article Abstract:

German confectionery output in 1994 is expected to have increased by about 6% according to reports from the Federal Association of the German Confectionery Industry. However retail turnover fell by 2% due to the hot summer, although products aimed at children and premium chocolates were successful. Confectionery sales through petrol stations rose, boosting sales turnover for wholesalers Lekkerland and Sugro. Advertising expenditure by confectionery manufacturers rose by 17.7% in 1994.

BADGE compound not linked to cancer, says German study

Article Abstract:

Bisphenol-A-Diglycidylether (BADGE) compound is found in lacquer used as a coating inside cans, which may be transmitted to foods in varying degrees during the production process. Ring pull cans were found to have the greatest BADGE contamination. The German Federal Institute for Consumer Protection and Veterinary Medicine (BgVV) concludes there is no significant carcinogenic possibility. The BgVV nevertheless recommends manufacturers take steps to minimise such contamination.

Controversy over German shop opening hours

Article Abstract:

Laws governing German store hours may be reformed but the issue has been shelved until summer 1995 by the government. Large retailers seek longer hours, while labor unions are concerned that working conditions will deteriorate. Retailers argue that longer hours will create part-time employment which is one of the government's aims. The chambers of commerce seek a slightly longer working day, while big retailers seek total deregulation.
