Morley Safer speaks on wine, food and health

Television journalist Safer has been drinking wine for many years and welcomed an opportunity to do a '60 Minutes' segment on why the French have fewer heart attacks, despite their high fat intake and low exercise. Research attributed it to moderate red wine consumption.

A food and wine critic who spent a month eating his way through France gained four pounds and had a modest rise in blood pressure. His HDL cholesterol rose slightly, which his physician told him was beneficial. The trip is described.

Three physicians answered questions at a Wine Experience seminar on the health aspects of moderate wine consumption. Those who enjoy moderate intake are at less risk of heart attack than abstainers or heavy drinkers.
