Organic food group opposes USDA rule

Article Abstract:

The Organic Trade Association (OTA), comprising over 600 groups involved in the organic food industry, is opposing the US Department of Agriculture's proposed new organic food regulations because they are incompatible with, and weaker than, current practices. The OTA says that nine features of the draft are at fault, including the definition of 'organic'. A consultation period will take place before the new rules become final.

Article Abstract:

In 1994, Italian consumption of organic foods totalled 0.5% of total food consumption; compared to an average of 1.5% across the European Union. Various hypermarkets and supermarkets have also set aside areas for organic produce.

UK supplies of organic food fail to meet demand

Article Abstract:

A marketing seminar hosted by the U.K.'s Ministry of Agriculture has been told that there are insufficient organic supplies being produced to meet growing consumer demand. It was generally agreed that the government should do more to encourage producers to switch to organic farming methods. However, all speakers were hopeful that the trend towards organic food will continue.
