Prices up 20 percent for top '97 Bordeaux futures

Article Abstract:

Prices for the first offering of the best Bordeaux wines in 1997 increased at an average of around 20% compared to 1996 prices. The increase, which was the third in a row for the industry, was attributed to the rising demand for the products around the world. However, wine merchants are not convinced that 1997 was an outstanding year for the wine industry, noting that products produced in 1997 are lower in quality compared to those produced in 1996 and 1995. Estimated futures prices for 1997 Bordeaux wines are approximately $130 to $150 for the first growths, $75 to $100 for "super seconds" and $35 to $75 for others.
