Tchibo hit by price fluctuation

Article Abstract:

German coffee group Tchibo has come under pressure as a result of continued fierce competition on price. The group reported a decline in first quarter sales that was softened only partially by an increase in turnover from consumer goods and the Reemtsma cigarette group, in which Tchibo holds a stake. Although volume sales of coffee rose 7% in the first three months of 1999, turnover dipped slightly, reported Wilfried Boysen, who is joint chief executive with Gunther Herz. Nevertheless, the 7% increase in turnover registered by the consumer goods business, which now accounts for 55% of turnover but 75% of profits following Tchibo's takeover of Eduscho, has ensured the continued growth of the business.
