Trying times in Champagne

Article Abstract:

An analysis of various vintage and non-vintage Champagnes is presented. Champagne is produced by blending wines from different vintages, and the current, highly expensive but low-quality Champagnes are based on the blends of 2001, which witnessed the worst climate in the past two decades.

Champagne, which is made in a variety of styles mostly, includes a blend of three major grape varieties, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. While the non-vintage brut and prestige cuvees have increased prices, most houses have held their prices steady.

Small-grower non-vintage Champagnes that rely on younger base years for their blends taste drier than the bigger-known brands. These Champagnes tend to reflect a more specific terroir and range from 8.6 acres to 62 acres.
