UK to take court action against European beef ban

Article Abstract:

The U.K. government is set to challenge the European Union's worldwide export ban on British beef because it says the restrictions are misjudged and unjustified. The U.K. will seek to have the ban reversed in the European Court of Justice. Additionally, agriculture minister Douglas Hogg has announced several new measures aimed at allaying fears over the safety of British beef and protecting the beef industry. However, a selective slaughter policy was not among the measures announced, although it is believed this is under consideration.

BSE now a Europe-wide problem for beef industry?

Article Abstract:

The consumption of beef has declined in all countries belonging to the European Union, because of the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) scare, and a number of governments are worried that there will be no return to the level of consumption reached before March 20 1996. In Germany, most purchases are from private butchers, who can verify where their meat comes from, whose sales are now back up to over 70% of pre-crisis sales, but supermarkets sales are still low.

UK launches beef assurance scheme

Article Abstract:

A beef assurance scheme has been introduced in the UK. The scheme guarantees that the herds from which the meat is sourced have never known a case of BSE. Up to 3,000 beef producers could apply to join the scheme, according to the UK National Farmer's Union. The scheme is primarily targeted at the domestic market, however, it is hoped that current bans on beef exports may be lifted for assured products.
