Where have all the workers gone? Border clampdown hits California wineries; prices may rise

Article Abstract:

Labor shortages in California vineyards in 2006 are likely to affect consumers with a hike in wine prices. The heightened border security after 9/11 in the US has hampered the availability of field hands who are mostly illegal Mexican immigrants, and a boom in construction activities results in a choice of less strenuous work for them, which leads to a demand for the workers and hence, higher costs due to increased wages that may have to be passed on to the consumer.
