Widespread 'short filling' discovered in US milk cartons

Article Abstract:

Over 40% of cartons of juice and dairy products were found to contain less than the specified weight of liquid in a study of 1500 cartons by the US Federal Trade Commission. The survey was conducted in 20 states and the shortages ranged from over 6% to under 1%, averaging 0.76% throughout the sample. Sales of liquid milk are worth $8 billion per year in the US and the shortages are substantial in total. The Milk Industry Foundation has promised tighter quality controls and help for its members.

No inquiry into Milk Marque

Article Abstract:

Calls for an inquiry by the Mergers and Monopolies Commision into the Milk Marque, the UK's main milk supplier, have been rejected by MPs. The Dairy Industry Federation, representing processors, claim that the cooperative was unfair in its pricing, and this claim was supporting by the Office of Fair Trading. MPs did not consider prices were unreasonably high and felt that the Milk Marque's producer contracts were sound and responsible.
