Dietary cholesterol and type of fat differentially affect cholesterol metabolism and atherosclerosis in baboons

Article Abstract:

A study was done on the effect of dietary cholesterol and type of fat on cholesterol metabolism and atherosclerosis in baboons. It was shown that serum lipoprotein and apolipoprotein concentrations are increased by high amounts of cholesterol and saturated fat. Bile cholesterol concentration is also increased by high dietary cholesterol. Saturated fat lowers liver cholesterol by 24%. Furthermore it was shown that whole body fat synthesis is affected by dietary cholesterol but not by type of fat.

Does excess dietary protein adversely affect bone? Symposium overview

Article Abstract:

The symposium of the Nutrition Working Group of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research in Cincinnati, OH, on Sep 10, 1997 focused on the effect of excessive dietary protein on the bones. Concern about the detrimental effects of excessive protein intake was raised because of findings that introduction of purified protein supplements disrupted calcium balance. However, in some instances, calcium balance was not observed to decrease as in the case of meat or dairy products diets.
