Effects of alcohol on energy metabolism and body weight regulation: is alcohol a risk factor for obesity?

Article Abstract:

Moderate alcohol consumption appears to be a risk factor for obesity. Thus, body weight factors should be taken into account when evaluating recommendations for sensible amounts of alcohol consumption. Alcohol-induced suppression of lipid oxidation can enhance positive energy balance, but the relationship with fat intake must also be considered. Research suggests that those wishing to consume alcohol at moderate levels should reduce fat intake as much as possible. Conversely, a higher fat diet should be combined with greater restrictions on alcohol consumption.

Diuretics and vitamin B1: are diuretics a risk factor for thiamin malnutrition?

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that the increase in urinary thiamin excretion brought on by diuretics usage can theoretically increase the risk of heart failure. While the metabolic link between thiamin, or vitamin B1, and heart failure has been established, it is not known whether subclinical nutriture would modulate the risk.
